Sustainable Development Goals (SDG)

In 2015, the United Nations adopted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The 17 goals provide a global framework for sustainable development and cover social, environmental and economic issues.

Wilo is committed to the principles of sustainable corporate governance and considers the Sustainable Development Goals a relevant framework for the further development of its business activities and sustainability measures.

In 2018, the Executive Board of the Wilo Group signed the UN Global Compact, reaffirming its support for the initiative’s principles. As a globally active water technology group, Wilo operates in areas that make a significant contribution to sustainable development. These include, in particular, solutions to improve water supply and increase energy efficiency in urban and industrial applications. Against this background, Wilo sees particular links to Sustainable Development Goals 6, 8, 9, 11, 12, 13 and 17.

SDG in Focus

The Wilo Group focuses on the goals for which concrete links arise from the company’s core business, technologies, and partnerships. The following priorities show the areas in which Wilo is active and how its business activities relate to the respective SDGs.

SDG 6

Clean Water and Sanitation

Wilo Group technologies are used, among other things, in water supply and wastewater disposal. Depending on the application, they can help operators pump and distribute water reliably, use energy more efficiently, and reduce water losses in supply systems.

SDG 8 Decent Work and Economic Growth

SDG 8

Decent Work and Economic Growth

As an internationally active company, the Wilo Group employs people at locations in various countries and is integrated into global supply and value chains. Links to SDG 8 arise in particular from working and employment conditions in its own business operations, the education and training of employees, and the requirements placed on business partners and suppliers.

SDG 9 Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

SDG 9

Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

Through demand-driven control, pump systems and digital solutions from the Wilo Group can help reduce the energy and resource consumption of installations and support the reliability of technical infrastructure.

SDG 11 Sustainable Cities and Communities

SDG 11

Sustainable Cities and Communities

Depending on the respective application, Wilo Group pumps and pump systems can support reliable water distribution, more energy-efficient building technology, and the operation of urban supply systems.

SDG 12 Responsible Consumption and Production

SDG 12

Responsible Consumption and Production

The Wilo Group pursues measures for more efficient use of materials and the further development of circular processes. These include, among other things, take-back systems for old equipment as well as the consideration of material use, energy consumption, and product lifetime in product development. The aim is to reduce the use of primary raw materials and keep materials in the usage cycle for as long as possible.

SDG 13 Climate Action

SDG 13

Climate Action

A key focus of Wilo Group’s product development is the energy efficiency of pumps and pump systems. High-efficiency products and demand-driven control solutions can reduce electricity consumption during the use phase compared with less efficient systems or systems that are not controlled according to demand. The actual reduction in energy use and emissions depends on the specific application, the baseline system, the operating mode, and the electricity mix used.

Partnerships for the Goals

The Wilo Group works in networks, collaborations, and projects with stakeholders from business, politics, academia, and society. This cooperation includes, among other things, professional exchange, the joint development of solution approaches, and the implementation of projects related to water, energy, and climate protection.

Voluntary contribution to climate action

As part of its global climate strategy, Wilo supports selected projects in the Global South that contribute to climate action and sustainable development. The projects relate to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that Wilo has identified as key areas for action. They are implemented in accordance with the recognised Gold Standard.

The Safe Water Programme provides disadvantaged schools and families with lasting access to clean drinking water. The project helps improve water availability and contributes to positive social and health outcomes in the participating communities. In addition, the reduced need to boil water can lower fuel consumption and associated household costs.

The project relates to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goals 1, 3, 6, 7, 8 and 13.

Wilo has supported the Gold Standard-certified project since 2023. For the 2025 reporting year, this support took the form of purchasing carbon credits from the project in Kenya. The verified project impact associated with these credits amounts to 8,315 tonnes of CO₂e.

Central Mozambique Safe Water Programme

Water Extraction in Africa

The Central Mozambique Safe Water Programme supports access to safe drinking water for disadvantaged communities. The project can help improve water quality and hygiene conditions in the participating communities. In addition, the reduced need to boil water can lower fuel consumption.

The project relates to several Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including Goals 3, 5, 6 and 13.

Wilo supports the Gold Standard-certified project as part of its commitment to water and climate issues. For the 2025 reporting year, this support took the form of purchasing carbon credits from the project in Mozambique. The verified project impact associated with the purchased credits amounts to 119 tonnes of CO₂e.
